8 At-Home Deep-Conditioning Treatments For Every Hair Type
Face masks get all the glory these days, but deep-conditioning hair treatments are just as restorative, perhaps even easier to execute, and deserve an equal amount of attention. Over the last few years, natural beauty brands have stepped up the hair game. Options were sparse at best, but now more shampoos, styling products, color options, and treatments have cropped up with improved quality and even better results.
Deep conditioners are almost always relevant. In the summer, it's good to nourish salt- and sun-soaked strands, while winter weather requires a little more moisture to fight static and dry locks. Below is a selection of the best deep-conditioning treatments by hair type:
1. Flaky Scalp—Weleda Rosemary Conditioning Hair Oil
The rosemary extract in Weleda's hair oil is naturally antimicrobial, which is perfect for nourishing all hair types and particularly helpful for a flaky scalp. Made without any synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants, and silicones, it's safe to leave on hair overnight, too. Brush through wet or dry hair in the evening, lay a towel down on your pillow, and shampoo once or twice to reveal silky hair and a calm scalp in the morning.

2. Fine Hair—Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Mask
Finding a moisturizing conditioner is tricky for fine hair types, which often need moisture but are easily weighed down. This weightless hair mask is ideal—made with coconut water instead of dense coconut oil, it helps make hair more manageable, especially when it comes to humidity-based frizz and static.

3. Dry, Damaged Hair—Living Libations Honey Myrtle Deep Conditioning Mask
Infused with oatstraw herb, known for its restorative properties, nettle, and horse chestnut, this conditioner is an herbalist's dream. Named for honey myrtle essential oil, which helps energize fatigued muscles and purify by balancing bacteria, it's a powerful treatment that can be used as much as once a week. Apply it after shampooing from midshaft to ends, and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing it out.

4. Thick, Curly, Textured Hair—True Moringa hair oil treatment
This moringa oil is light enough to use as a styling product and also potent enough to deeply condition and protect the hair. Rub a pump in between your hands, and apply from midshaft to ends, and let it dry naturally for a "matte" finish that won't look greasy.

5. Dull, Overstyled Hair—Burt’s Bees Pre-Shampoo Avocado Oil
If it's a hair wash day, or if you want to style your hair with a little extra shine, show it some pre-shampoo love with this avocado-based treatment. Avoid the scalp if your hair tends to fall flat with conditioner (alternatively, plan to shampoo twice), and apply in the shower before your normal shampoo and comb through the ends. Avocado, rosemary extract, and nettle impart a lasting shine. Leave it in for at least 5 minutes or as long as 20 before shampooing.

6. Sensitive Scalp & Slow-Growing Hair—Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Treatment
Thanks to tea tree oil, Briogeo's scalp treatment feels like a minty blast of refreshing air into most of the most tense yet neglected parts of our bodies: the scalp. Massage the treatment into the scalp a few minutes before shampooing, and let the charcoal work its detoxifying magic. While the directions say you can leave it in, it can appear slightly greasy especially for fine hair, so leave it on overnight or for 20 minutes before washing. With regular use, it can improve the scalp's condition and even help hair to grow faster.

7. Colored Hair—Sun Bum 3-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner
Sum Bum's 3-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner contains SPF to protect colored hair from the elements, including UV rays. Mental health benefits include feeling like you're at the beach, thanks to the smell of coconut and banana. Made without silicone, alcohol, and parabens, it's lightweight and perfect for everyday use. Spritz a little on ends after the shower, brush through, and style as usual.

8. Brittle, Damaged, Colored, Dry Hair—Rare Elements Masque
This is one of green beauty's best-kept secrets. Rare Element's masque is a salon-quality deeply hydrating conditioner that helps improve the texture and manageability of hair prone to frizz, breakage, and dullness. Especially if you're not into hair oils, try applying this after a shampoo, leaving it on for 5 to 10 minutes, and then rinsing with cold water for hair that looks and feels super healthy.
